What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is all about sharing experiences.

It is a developmental caring, sharing and helping relationship where one person invests time, know-how and effort to enhance another person's growth, knowledge and skills. It is about mentors imparting the multiple lessons that they've learned to their mentees and helping them better navigate their own careers. By absorbing these lessons -- of mentors' mistakes and successes - mentees are better prepared to move forward with knowledge and confidence.

The Benefits of Mentorship

  • Benefit from another person's vision, experience and learning
  • Help get focused on career plans and career moves
  • Experience a non-threatening climate to test your ideas, skills and viewpoints
  • Become energized by achievement, mastery and personal growth
  • Grow in personal power and ability
  • And more!

The Mentor

Mentors inspire their mentees to learn and grow: to see new things and new possibilities not only in their jobs, but also in themselves. The mentor's task is to inspire, challenge and direct the mentees -- to instill in them confidence and responsibility to take informed, calculated risks resulting in a more creative contribution to the job. The mentor serves as an ally, a catalyst and a coach.

Why be a Mentor?

Mentoring allows you to invest in others and gain the satisfaction of helping another reach his or her goals. It can also mean self-development or a substantial personal change, such as self-esteem, self-confidence and the affirmation of professional competence. Mentoring should be viewed as a partnership -- after all, learning is a two-way street!

The Mentee

The mentee makes an effort to assess, internalize and effectively use the knowledge, skills, insights, perspectives and/or wisdom offered by the mentor. The mentee is responsible for his or her overall development --setting goals, developing a personal plan of action and driving the process.

Why have a Mentor?

A mentoring partnership can challenge you to achieve new goals and take risks. It provides encouragement and support and allows you an environment to discuss your issues and concerns. Mentors can provide "real life" examples, and help you set priorities to balance your work and personal Life.

The Mentoring Process

A successful process provides mentors and mentees with specifics on what to do, what to talk about, and how to take action. WISE is committed to giving you the tools needed to make mentoring a successful journey. We'll review roles and responsibilities for mentors and mentees, tips, and ways to make the partnership successful for all.
